The Kim Dae-jung Library was established in 2003 as Asia’s first presidential memorial library, with the mission of promoting democracy and peace and combating poverty.

It was founded based on the wishes of former President Kim Dae-jung, the 15th President of the Republic of Korea and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who donated the library building, over 16,000 archival materials, more than 10,000 books, and his Nobel Peace Prize prize money to Yonsei University, as well as the founding philosophy of the university.

A presidential library serves as a facility that preserves and publicly shares materials, documents, and photographs related to a president’s term in office. It also conducts archival projects, exhibitions, research, educational programs, and international cooperation initiatives.

While presidential libraries are not yet firmly established in South Korea, the Kim Dae-jung Library, as the country’s first presidential library, aims to set a model for future presidential libraries in Korea.
